An Intricate Hot Cell Installation for VTT<\/h1>\n\t\t\t

Our hot cell engineering experts at Isotope Technologies Dresden (ITD) were tasked to design and construct a fully customized turnkey solution to examine and test materials from nuclear power plants for the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and their Centre for Nuclear Safety.

New Hot Cell Laboratories for the VTT Centre for Nuclear Safety<\/h2>\n
\n\n

It was one of the biggest projects, that our colleagues in Dresden<\/a> ever tackled – A modern complex with eleven hot cells for the safe handling of radioactive material<\/a> at the VTT Centre for Nuclear Safety in Espoo, Finland.<\/p>\n\n\n

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland<\/p>

VTT<\/a> is a state-owned and controlled non-profit company and the largest research and technology company conducting applied research in Finland. It provides research and innovation services and information for domestic and international customers and partners, both in private and public sectors.
VTT is part of Finland’s\u00a0innovation system\u00a0and operates under the mandate of the\u00a0Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n\t\n\n\n

During the project our colleagues worked together closely with the VTT-Team to ensure that the facility is tailored to their needs and to the equipment used in their tests.<\/p>\n

Hot Cell Installation at the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n

To enable access to the in-cell equipment, a rear maintenance area with sealed doors and glove ports was included. Safe handling of the samples was ensured through the integration of master-slave-manipulators, stationary hoists and bridge cranes as well as a specially designed reception cell compatible with different transport casks.\u00a0 Electrical discharge machining and electron beam welding are used to produce smaller test specimens from the material. To transport the large number of fractured samples within the system, a special conveyor system was designed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Furthermore the complex system automates various steps of VTT’s thorough visual, mechanical and analytical testing process.<\/p>\n
