Introduction

As a leader in the specialized radiopharmaceutical industry, Eckert & Ziegler also provides essential contract development and GMP compliant contract manufacturing services (CMO) that bridge the gap for biotech and pharma firms lacking in-house radiopharmaceutical production and handling capabilities. These services are crucial, especially given the stringent requirements of GMP and radiation protection standards in the radiopharmaceutical environment.

Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)

GMP refers to a set of guidelines and regulations that ensure products, particularly in the pharmaceutical, food, and medical device industries, are consistently produced and controlled according to quality standards. GMP covers all aspects of production, from raw materials to employee hygiene, equipment, and the final product. Adherence to GMP helps prevent contamination, mix-ups, errors, and ensures that products are safe for use and meet their intended specifications.

The Importance of CMO Services in the Radiopharmaceutical Industry

In the world of nuclear medicine, many great companies develop promising compounds—such as specific peptides or antibodies for cancer diagnosis and treatment—but also face significant barriers in bringing these products to market due to the high costs, expansive know-how requirements and regulatory hurdles associated with radiopharmaceutical production. This is where Eckert & Ziegler steps in, offering its well-established infrastructure and expertise to produce radiopharmaceuticals on a contract basis. By leveraging their capabilities, companies can efficiently move from development to clinical and commercial production, supported by a comprehensive service portfolio including reliable isotope supply, synthesizer equipment, and quality control devices.

Meet the Expert

To gain deeper insights into Eckert & Ziegler’s CMO services, we sat down with Dr. Michael Pröhl, our Director of CMO Business.

Question: Michael, can you share a bit about your background and how you came to lead the CMO business at Eckert & Ziegler?

Michael Pröhl: Absolutely. My journey began with a PhD in Chemistry, after which I worked at the Central Clinic in Bad Berka. There, I had the opportunity to produce various radiopharmaceutical products directly for patients in compliance with GMP conditions. I joined Eckert & Ziegler in 2018 and since then held various roles including Radiochemist, Project Manager, Head of Qualification/Validation, and now, overseeing the entire CMO business. Alongside my professional work, I am also pursuing an MBA and am currently working on my master’s thesis.
